December 9, 2014 Backstage Vibe Interview – Luna Sopor : Cobalt

Backstage Vibe Interview – Luna Sopor : Cobalt
New Music: Rock band Luna Sopor announces their latest singles from of their new album Cobalt!

[BSV] Tell us about your band. Who is in it? Where you’re from? What kind of music you play? How did you get your name? How did you all meet and get together?

Luna Sopor was formed in 2008 by Troy Szabo, Jeff Janow, and Marie Szabo in San Francisco, California – United States. Jeff and Troy worked together at that time and wanted to create a band that allowed them to combine diverse influences from Rock, Punk, and Metal Music. Luna Sopor’s music is often characterized as having driving Rock guitars with powerful female lead vocals. People sometimes compare Luna Sopor to a hybrid sound or style such as No Doubt meets Social Distortion. We recorded our first album in 2011, it was Rock and Classic Rock sounding, and a couple of our songs, Vertigo and My Demise, really connected with Our Fans. Our latest Album is entitled Cobalt, and it is much more towards a Hard Rock and Punk musical style, coupled with powerful female lead vocals. For this album, we chose Jane D., because she brings a growling rock sound that is appropriate to our musical style. However, Luna Sopor’s sound is always evolving, and we really value the fan interaction with us, at our shows and on our social networks, because it has helped us to visualize, create, and evolve.

[BSV] Who does most of the writing for your band? What inspires you all to do what you do?

Jeff Janow writes all of the music and usually has a good sense of the general direction and how a track should come together and be produced. We usually share in the lyric writing duties. We seem to do our best lyrical work when writing the lyrics together as a group. Hmmm, what inspires us? Well, Jeff claims to have an uncanny psychic connection with his cat who tells him what to write. Troy sees this project as cheaper than buying a corvette and getting a girlfriend half his age. And, Marie is an unwilling hostage forced into indentured servitude as drummer for the band. As for Jane, her current whereabouts is unknown. However, the last we heard, she was up in the Arctic Circle, on some kind of environmentalist mission that builds Igloos for Penguins.

[BSV] What are some of the highlights from the past year? Is there anything you all are working on now or looking forward to?

We just got out of the studio. We finished recording and mixing our second full length album entitled ‘Cobalt’. We are on a mission to get our new music into as many people’s ears as possible. We are planning a tour in support of our ‘Cobalt’ album this summer, and we are hoping to get into a few of the rock-friendly summer festivals in Europe. We are also working on shooting music videos for some of the songs on the Cobalt album.

[BSV] What is making music to you?

Making music is a tremendous opportunity to contribute to something that inevitably becomes more interesting than any one single contribution. It is the ability to participate in and help create art that is infinite and timeless. It is a fabulous opportunity to share a part of ourselves with other people. And, it is also much cheaper than therapy, which one of us won’t do, because “they will take away his gun rights”.

[BSV] What do you all do for fun when you’re not making or playing music?
Beer, Concerts, Travel, Movies, Camping, Hiking, and did I mention Beer?

[BSV] If you each had to pick your ‘coolest thing in the world’, what would it be?

Jeff: I can rationalize pretty much anything, and at the same time I can also create an impossible paradox with only a pair of twigs and a book of matches. So, the coolest thing for me is often the gritty, pervasive, and undeniable details and lessons of World History.

[BSV] Anything else we should know about you or your band?

We are Coffee fanatics, big time! So if on any given day, you were to ask me who my favorite person is, I would probably respond that it is the hot little barista at Starbucks that just hooked me up with my Quadra-Latte!

[BSV] What is one thing you’ve learned during your career in music?

Any advice for people starting out in the industry? We have learned that an open mind is required to accomplish anything. We have had to learn to adapt and overcome our problems and individual challenges. And ultimately, we understand that patience and resolve are essential qualities not just in music, but when working with other people in general.

If we had to give any advice to those just starting out we say:

  1. Work hard and be grateful for the opportunities that come your way.
  2. Don’t be a diva… No one likes a diva.
  3. When you have an opportunity, you hit the ball out of the park!
  4. NEVER take NO for an answer.

About the Band

Luna Sopor was formed in the San Francisco Bay Area by Jeff Janow and Troy Szabo while working together in 2008. Luna Sopor has many diverse elements in their Music that culminate into a flowing, punchy, and often heavy stylistic Rock Sound. Characterized by driving Guitars and powerful Female Lead Vocals, Luna Sopor’s music melds Rock, Punk, and elements of Metal into a mesmerizing whole. The Bay Area-based four piece band released its eponymously titled debut album in 2011, which was recorded at the famous Golden Gate Studio in San Francisco. The album has received a good amount of radio airplay and critical acclaim. Luna Sopor has just completed the release of their second studio album entitled COBALT (released 11/15/2014). The latest album was recorded at Motor Studio in San Francisco. It consists of 11 hard rocking songs, and the band is very proud and also excited to finally be able to share their new album with Rock Fans globally.

Entertwine Interview – Featured Rising Artist: Luna Sopor

Luna Sopor is from San Francisco Ca, and was formed in 2008 by Jeff Janow, Troy Szabo, and Marie Szabo. The Rock heavy sound of Luna Sopor was forged right from the start, characterized by driving guitars and backed by a frenzied yet accessible rhythm section. The music continued to develop going forward, and with the addition of a new vocalist -Jayne D., whom brings a drive, attitude, and Rock and Roll signature presence to the vocals and the chorus harmonies. Luna Sopor’s music is often described as crunchy hard rock with powerful female lead vocals. Luna Sopor has just completed the release of their second full length studio album entitled Cobaltí and the band is excited to share their new music with rock fans globally

Hi Luna, Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions! We’ll start with the basics from the beginning – What led to the formation of Luna Sopor? How did the members of the band meet and begin writing and playing music together?

Jeff Janow and Troy Szabo formed Luna Sopor in 2008 while working together at a Chip Manufacturer in Silicon Valley. Marie Szabo had previously played with Troy in a touring professional worship band, so she seemed the logical choice and was shoulder tapped by Troy and Jeff to be the band’s drummer. Luna Sopor released its first album in 2011, and that album was primarily classic rock sounding. However, for the Cobalt Album, we wanted to go a bit heavier on the music and the vocals, so we enlisted Jayne D, a San Francisco Native.

What is it like living in and making music in San Francisco?

San Francisco is a melting pot of cultures, visitors, and activities. There are great live music venues to play shows at, such as “Neck of the Woods” (formerly the famous “Rockit Room”) and “The Connecticut Yankee”. There are also plenty of fun outdoor events, such as the annual “Beer Week Festival”. In short, there is plenty of fun stuff to do and it is typically never boring…

Do you have any upcoming shows in your hometown?

We are currently working on our show schedule for spring and the summer months of 2015. The best way to stay in touch with us regarding news and concert dates is to connect with us on our Social Networks.

What experiences and events inspired the writing and recording of your latest record “Cobalt”?

Much of the writing for our Cobalt Album was done out of creative obsession. I say that jokingly, however, we are always writing and playing new stuff and much of that would come in the form of collaborative effort. Typically, Jeff would write a new piece of music, and then the rest of the band would fight over who gets to write the lyric. Ultimately, everyone would end up contributing to some part of the song in their own way.

Entertwine Interview - Featured Rising Artist: Luna Sopor

Could you walk us through each of the featured tracks?

I would say there are at least 4 Tracks on the Cobalt Album which we would call featured tracks. We think Future, Cake, City of Lights, and Undertow are the tracks that are the most representative of our playing style and musical sound.

Future: Future is a fast hard rock song about struggling relationships and also overcoming difficult personal challenges. It features powerful female lead vocals and technical sounding rock guitars.

Cake: Cake is a mid tempo chunky sounding rock song that is about greed and salvation in relationships.

City of Lights: City of Lights is a rock ballad that features acoustic and electric sounds, and it is about abandonment, survival, hope, and personal growth. This one is a bit dark feeling but it also has an upside, I guess that is why people like it.

Undertow: Undertow is a quirky & progressive instrumental tune that was inspired by the dark and suspicious nature of current global events.

How does this new album differ from or expand on your previous release?

Our first Album was very classic rock or AOR sounding. Our music continued to develop going forward, and the latest album entitled Cobalt has more of a crunchy hard rock feel coupled with driving female rock present vocals.

Could you tell us about the recording process behind “Cobalt”?

The process is pretty straight-forward. Jeff writes the music and also works out the initial pre-production in his home studio. Then the other band members contribute in areas such as lyrics, and we rehearse the songs. When we get to the actual studio, the tracking and mixing goes pretty quick, because we already have most of the important parts figured out.

What was it like working with Zack Phillips at Freq Lab Recording?

It is always a joy to work with Zack, because he genuinely wants to help the Artist get the best performances captured. He is also very knowledgeable, which has helped us to solve whatever minor problems that would crop up along the way.

What does 2015 hold in store for Luna Sopor?

Luna Sopor is going to be busy in 2015. In Q2, we hope to have some new Luna Sopor music recorded and ready to share with everyone. And, we are also currently working on a side project with a Singer/Songwriter type recording artist. Towards the end of Q2, we hope to have some interesting and diverse music and news to share with you.

JamSphere Magazine Review – Luna Sopor: ‘Cobalt’

JamSphere Magazine Review

January 12, 2015 JamSphere Magazine Review by Rick Jamm

Luna Sopor: ‘Cobalt’ – A delicious blend of polished punk and guitar-roaring alternative rock!

Luna Sopor is an original high energy Rock Band from the San Francisco Bay Area. The band was started by bassist Troy Szabo, guitar player Jeff Janow, and drummer Marie Szabo in 2008. The Bay Area-based band released its eponymously titled debut album in 2011, which was recorded at the famous Golden Gate Studio in San Francisco, receiving a good amount of radio airplay and critical acclaim.

JamSphere Magazine ReviewLuna Sopor has now released their full length sophomore album entitled ‘Cobalt’. The band has also been joined by Jayne D. on vocals, bringing a new dimension to their sound. The album was Recorded and Mixed by Zack Phillips at Freq Lab Recording in Motor Studio, San Francisco and Mastered by Andy Bartow at Black Dog Mastering Studio, Tampa Bay, Fl.

Luna Sopor’s ‘Cobalt’ demonstrates an enormous move forward from their self-titled debut. This album shimmers with rich, warm and fuzzy guitars, thick and powerful drums, thumping basslines, soaring bittersweet vocals, and very effective hooks, which the production intensifies with a slick and polished, luster, however very effectively leaving the raw, true-grit sound of the band totally intact.

The album’s highlights include “Candy Crush”, which opens the recording with a high-speed, powerful punk and metal-flavored edge, then Jayne D.’s scathing vocals on “Cake” maintains the energy, while the song incorporates a stinging guitar solo and heavy grinding riffs. This is followed by the electrifying “Future” and builds up to the climax of the awesome “North Star” and “High Roller Coaster”, where the lead vocals and harmonies soar up and down together on a magic carpet ride of colorful guitar chords and thundering riffs.

The sound switches on the brilliantly moving “City of Lights”, which demonstrates emotion that you just can’t help but feel as you hear Jayne D. make the transition from a pleasant verse, into a tortured and soulful chorus then back again. Reminding so much of one of the most underrated female artists of our time, the bold and brazen-voiced Linda Perry, and she’s just as stunningly attractive too!

The album continues forward without losing momentum through the tracks, “Alchemy”, the sprawling guitars sounds of “House of Lies”, the crashing punk of “Hands Up”, the changing rock tempos of “Better” plus the eclectic and forcefully driven, instrumental closer, “Undertow”.

‘Cobalt’ is raw emotion without being too garage rock, angry but still kick-butt sweet in places. What gives it an edge is the songwriting, the band’s all round solid performances, Jeff Janow’s extraordinary guitar riffs and solos, and without a doubt the cherry on top is presented by Jayne D. distinctive lead vocals.

Luna Sopor’s ‘Cobalt’ is a delicious blend of polished punk and guitar-roaring alternative rock. It’s exciting and full of energy, yet it has the rich level of depth and contemplation that we’ve come to associate with great artists. If you want to bolster you rock music collection, go and get this album. I swear you won’t be disappointed!

Luna Sopor releases new album ‘Cobalt’

Luna Sopor - Cobalt

Luna Sopor returns with their second full length studio album entitled ‘Cobalt’ available for digital download on Saturday, November 15th 2014.

Luna Sopor was formed in the San Francisco Bay Area by Jeff Janow and Troy Szabo while working together in 2008. The Bay Area-based four piece released it’s eponymously titled debut album in 2011, which was recorded at the famous Golden Gate Studio in San Francisco, and the album has received a good amount of radio airplay and critical acclaim.

The Luna Sopor sound is perpetually evolving, and many of the recent augmentations were actually driven by the many comments, requests, and interactions with the band’s fans at live shows as well as on their social networks. The most recent and notable enhancement, is that the band was joined by Jayne D. on vocals, whom brings a heavy, rock present, and emotionally charged performance to Luna Sopor’s vocal structure and chorus harmonies.

Luna Sopor has just completed the release of their second studio album entitled ‘Cobalt’. This latest release was recorded and mixed with Zack Phillips at Freq Lab Recording in Motor Studio, San Francisco. It consists of eleven hard rocking songs.

Jeff Janow, lead guitarist and primary songwriter says of the new release, “Cobalt is a bit harder sounding musically than our last Album. It’s hard rocking stuff, smoking hot tracks “Future” “Cake” and “Candy Crush” are taking it up to a level in that the new music has totally eclipsed our last album. However, we were also able to bring up the dynamics to include a few commercially approachable songs such as “City of Lights” and “North Star”.” Bassist Troy Szabo added “With this album, as with our last, we have a deep desire to share positive conscious messages.”
